Leadership and Vassalage
We have sat down and discussed the questions that has arisen due to my post on leadership and vassalage. More specifically the need to have 1 dot in leadership per vassal sworn directly to you. Here is where we are coming from.
You are having someone swear to you (someone who does not have to). Why? Why do they want to follow you? Leadership is the practical skill of leading others, being a leader. It had not really occurred to us that people wouldn't take it and then with the late rush of character sheets it was my bad for not catching this sooner.
Vampires are highly competitive monsters. Other than personal friendship out of character what might dive this intellectual to want to swear to the really tough fighter? What benefits do they gain by swearing to them versus the highly social individual who mingles, interacts and is on the social rise, who has shown their ability to lead others to success?
Many of the characters have been built extremely potent of blood and discipline with little to no rounding of skills except in their one area of expertise, combat, magic, discipline...
BUT, since I did not mention that it would be required we have decided to remove this requirement. Though we strongly suggest to those who are going to be swearing to others to consider why your character would want to subjugate themselves to this particular character, how are they going to help you rise.
This leads us into
Downtime Requirements
Again we have had hints that perhaps our requirements might be a bit much. Though some people are quite happy with them.
Requirements are just that. Things needed to complete a objective.
If you wish to plan an event, host a feast and raise some stat in your domain for the year how do you do it? As we have just seen it can be done. The more personal skill you have in possible areas that would benefit you planning this event the easier it is and the less outside requirements that would be needed.
In the case of the festivities in Triest.
There was a need for someone to organize, plan and co-ordinate everything. This required a fair bit of "Senschal" skill. The individual found a way to supply this.
There was the need to supply the food, decorations and convince the local mayor that this was a good idea. Resources.
This was some of the requirements.
Now let us say in real life you want to plan the most awesome road trip to the Okanagan, gather a group of Ogopogo enthusiasts to go on a great search and hunt. Arrange to speak to locals who have supposedly seen the beast (and been laughed at so much they need to be convinced to tell their story yet again and risk more laughter).
Well you need to get there.
You have no car, you are unemployed, you have never been to BC and you want to make it a week long trip filled with stops and activities.
Real life, find a member who has a car or arrange to borrow one.
Find some money to pay for gas, food, supplies and lodging during the trip
Research where it has been spotted the most and track down some people who will meet with you who have sighted it.
Find some other cool activities.
co-ordinate all the various personalities and timing so that everyone who goes has fun. Solve any disputes. (Leadership)
We are applying this to the game also.
You can not lead men if you can not lead, or at least not well or through unknown intermediaries.
If you are a combat character only with nothing but combat skills that is OK, it is your character. but they may not be able to do some things that other characters can. This is why we co-operate.
Anyone can throw money at a group of semi trained individuals and gather them together into a force. But what if you have no money or very little? well equipment is not going to be as high quality, maybe second hand or battlefield pickings. Then lets consider going on the offensive? who is going to plan the assault on so and so's castle? skills and knowledge are direct representations of these abilities. Character sheets determine what your character has learned in their past and what they are capable of doing.
In real life our character sheets are virtual, we either can do it or we can't. OR we think we can do it but in reality are not very good at it. Some people can assemble a bookcase without instructions and some can't. Some people try but end up with broken shelves, lopsided legs and so forth. Some people drive really good and safe, some suck and know they suck. Others think they are great but really suck (Canada's worst drivers)
Quest Requirements
We take into consideration your skills and what you commonly have access to. If you are doing something that is part of your characters regular life then we make it easier for you. If it is outside your characters norm we make it more difficult and hence more requirements.
We are trying to encourage characters to work together to accomplish something. The more involved in the same task (or related) the easier it becomes. If Multiple characters are involved in a general task you can do more extra things. Search, translate, interrogate coordinate...
We have offered a side door to requirements if you do not wish to work with another or if they are busy. The Beggars cart offers almost anything you can think of. Just ask. BUT there is and will be a cost, higher if you could have got it through roleplaying and cooperation instead of being a lone wolf. Anything we get in payment goes into the draw deck.
We are trying to be fair and semi realistic as to what each character can accomplish on their own or with help.
