Downtime #1 & Merchant
I will be beginning the construction of an Inn next to the Watchtower.
-if possible, if I could create a large meeting room in the basement of the Inn (which I could potentially use to host any Gathers or meetings).
-if possible, I would also like a way to connect the Inn to my haven, even if it's a secret passage through the store room, so that I have access between the two.
-my Merchant Retainer will be my mouthpiece for this process, and as well I shall be investing his Downtime Action into completion of the Inn also.
I have two dots of Resources, Leadership, and my Retainer(3) has Commerce, Seneschal, and Politics to aid.
Jaak: Paper, Scissors, Scissors, Paper, Rock (Loss - Troublesome Merchant, Win, bonus tie) Us: S, P, S, R, P Merchant: Rock, Rock, Rock, Paper, Paper (Tie, Win, Bonus Tie) Us: R, S, R, R, P
My thoughts: I am thinking that what we will do is combine this with a haven background. He will have to purchase a Haven that has both the size and the staff options. If he invests a good amount of time and money he can also make this a good travelers hub that will add a wealth to the City and it will also be under his control.
Requirements: Purchase Land, Resources x 5 or more to make it good and fancy (or luxury as part of the haven background), 4 downtime actions.

Complaining that it will take away from his business. He is doing a really good job standing in the way. Your retainer managed to get the process going for the land to be sold to you but this guy has managed to tie it up and prevent it. What do you do?

Jaak: Very well. It's a shame it's gonna have to go down like this...
The City Guard will be alerted to Moorish sympathizers hiding in the city. They've been here for a couple years, since the invaders did a blockade around the Holy Church to prevent proper worship. To prevent another invasion, or worse (as we all know what propoganda a Crusade-favouring city has on the Enemy), these hideouts will be raided and shut down.
I am directing our City Defense (through my ghouled captain) to raid and board up the Inns this bastard has. If he's worried about a little cut, let's see how he handles a choke hold on his cash flow.

Response to Inn's being shutdown and the crusade heading this way is Chaos. No one gets anything done.
A large arm of the Crusade has turned and is marching directly towards Trieste.
In the unrest approximately 1/3 of the local defense forces turned out and enhanced the chaos within the city shutting down several Inn's and brothels claiming them to be Moorish sympathizers.
This unrest quickly grows into finger pointing and claims of neighbours being affiliated with unholy things. Another portion of the watch begins looking at other businesses for ANY pagan affiliations.
Mother Isis's estate is quarantined though no one has yet attempted to enter. It is rumored that perhaps the grounds themselves are tainted due to the unatural death of the entire bloodline except for the bastard child Isis.
The Convent of the Black Madeline is also quarantined. Many generic businesses and such are being searched.
The Church always quick to take advantage when they can further the cause of the one True God, is preaching about unholy acts and how a purge of sinners may be needed and if most of their soldiers were not on the crusade they would be themselves rounding people up to burn and purge evil from the streets. This view is gaining a foothold and those wishing to prove themselves devout are beginning to talk of forming a inquisition in the city to cleanse it of Moorish sympathizers and Pagan taint.
With a good number of the local forces now inside the walls and the watch tower now all but abandoned the workers that were looking at building an inn have either fled the area to avoid the coming army or locked themselves inside the walls.
It seems some of the Councillors are still looking to the benefit of the city. The remaining city forces have been divided into maintaining peace in the streets and into travelling with wagons to the outlying farms to gather supplies and food for a siege.
It is unknown how long Trieste will be able to hold against the inquisition but it seems the gates will be barred until the motives of this army are known.
Other rumors among the general populace are that though the Merchant lords are bringing food into the warehouses for the city a good potion is also disappearing into their own cellars.

(Seriously, I am pleasantly entertained on how this has blown up in my face.)
Alright. Let's try some subtlety then. I will write a letter, in Arabic, but not quite finish the letter. Then, I will obfuscate, sneak into the Merchant Lord's house late at night, and stab him with a dagger/knife found in his house. Place unfinished letter on his person, to make it appear a servant found him out and stabbed him. I suppose some of his riches in the house should go missing also, to make it look like his servant has fled.
"Sultan,
I write this under gravest circumstances. I do not know how, but my presence has been detected. I fear that I can not leave the city safely, and with the Crusaders marching it is only a matter of time before my alleigance is discovered.
I have destroyed any evidence, and had my Qu'ran smuggled out already with the rest of my cell. I am prepared to face Allah alone, martyred for "

After killing the Merchant, his eldest son take the Mantel and leads the merchant house. While he is ensuring his hold over the family businesses he does not seem to have the time to hinder you or the desire. Word comes back though that he does however attend any council meetings and that he supported all the land purchases on the docket.
Your request for land purchase goes before council again along with some other redefining of land and other land sales and is passed.
You break open/into to Strong box you stole and find a plethora of Gems and coin. Enough to provide funds to pay tradesman to build you your nice solid inn. Main floor and foundation is stone the upper level is Wood. Nice wood paneling and so forth. Other money you spend to pay the offered bribes to the Merchants former allies.
Though the inn will be well on it's way, the delay of the feint from the crusade means it will not be fully complete until after gather. The Main tap room is fully complete as well as a roofed area outside. If you set up a tent you can still host gather here. This will cost the last of the stolen money.
