Some remember Rafael "the Angel" Vega as a presence in Italy that rose to some prominence as a Neonate after the fall of Rome, although, to most, the details are murky. He has been sighted on and off since then, usually where great projects of any sort are being undertaken, after which he tends to disappear for decades, leaving no trace of his whereabouts.
In 1098, he exploded back into the scene in Spain, entering into a century-long duel with an Asamite. The fighting was dirty, merciless, and brutal, and as it dragged on year after year, as they slaughtered or destroyed each other's holdings, a pit of hatred for all things Moorish grew in Rafael. He managed to succeed in fighting the Asamite to a shaky truce, but by the time this feud had ended, he had a burning disdain for the people on the Southern shore of the Mediterranean. He sold his holdings in that land and returned to Italy, to set up shop once again and, perhaps this time, build something that would last.
