You need at least a two paragraph history to be able to get the maximum amount of starting xp to build your character. Make it good.

STs, correct me if I am mistaken, but I believe the history they are referring to is the private blurb that has your character's deep backstory, with secret information only you and the STs/admins will know at first. This is to help guide the overall narrative and shape possible story hooks. If, for example, my Lasombra corsair has an unhealthy phobia of snakes because of some traumatic childhood incident, then there's a pretty good chance some Followers of Set might show up sometime, etc. The optional history you are thinking of is the public bio anyone could discover with a DT action, like the stuff that has been posted in the Cast section of this board. That one IS optional if you want 5 bonus xp. The other is not, I believe. Hope that is helpful.

The history is not manditory. It is just a get to know you that other characters could learn. That and we are giving an extra 5xp as an incentive.
